Wellness Initiatives at PPS
Positive Education Initiative
Our wellness initiatives directly support the Strategic Plan's Wellness goal to implement policies and practices that promote wellness and balance for students and staff. We believe that a focus on well-being, both physical and mental, is essential in supporting our PPS community members in leading lives of joy, purpose and true success.
This year, staff have participated in a number of professional development opportunities, including a Day of Wellness in-service day led by Positive Education Coach Katie Curran as well as a series of fitness challenges, culminating in the May Challenge. In April, Katie held a series of parent workshops on the science and skills of Positive Psychology, exploring research-based strategies in helping children develop resilience, enhance well-being and improve performance. The individual sessions are tailored to parents of children in specific age groups:
Student-centered initiatives include a new homework-free policy as well as research and review on possible future policies, such as optimal start times for the school day. Our Athletics 2.0 Committee comprised of coaches, community members administrators and parents has been reviewing our athletics programs to help promote a balance between the development of athletic skill and of personal character and a spirit of community. This year also marks the creation of green teams at every school, supported through grants by Sustainable Jersey for Schools.
